Hand Scan

Hand geometry systems are accurate, simple to use, are impervious to fraudulent deception, and are readily accepted by users. This technology is generally considered mature, but its range of usable applications is generally limited to access control and attendance. People do have similar hand geometry in some cases (about 1 in 100), which makes hand geometry less distinctive than finger-scanning.

Currently, some commercial biometric applications are using the two-dimensional shape of the hand for access control. Users place their hand on a reader, aligning their fingers with specially positioned guides. A camera positioned above the hand captures an image. Measurements generally center on finger length and the shape of fingers and knuckles. Commercial systems designed to perform three-dimensional shape analysis of the hand are under development.
