                          About the Book

It’s a Rat Race out there and the Rats are Winning. In a survey published by the Society for Human Resource Professionals, more than 80% of workers surveyed during the economic downturn of 2002/2003 were dissatisfied with their job or company and planned to look for a new job when economic conditions improve. With a private industry workforce of over 107 million, something is seriously wrong in Corporate America when 85 million workers are unhappy to the point jumping ship, regardless of the economic times.

Corporate greed, cutting wages, threats of layoffs and an indifferent attitude towards their employees were all cited in the SHRP survey as contributing factors to such a high number of unhappy and disenfranchised workers.

However, are these only symptoms of a much larger problem, a problem that has been brewing since the late 18th century with the dawn of the First Industrial Revolution?

The Corporate Rat Race, The Rats are Winning: A Game Plan for Surviving and Thriving in Corporate America, has a unique message for the 85 million unhappy workers of Corporate America. A unique message in that Rat Race is not just another how-to-be-a-success book peering from the “outside in”, but a fresh perspective from inside of Corporate America, by an author who is kindred to the daily trials and travails of the unhappy 85 million.

Based on personal experiences, journals, interviews and research, Rat Race is an examination of the evolution of Corporate America from the early days of the First Industrial Revolution, through the Scientific Management Movement, the Great Depression and World War II; and how these eras shaped the state of Corporate America today. Rat Race then builds upon the evolution of Corporate America to define what the Corporate Rat Race is, how it works and the essentials of dealing with the Rat Race; culminating with a game plan for first surviving and then thriving in the Corporate Rat Race.

Sometimes humorous, sometimes sad, sometimes gut-wrenching, yet always thought provoking, each chapter of Rat Race contains extraordinary real-life anecdotes and experiences that every reader will be able to relate to. There is nothing new under the sun, and the Corporate World is no exception.
